I love coffee

I am a coffee addict. I love to drink coffee. Coffee is not just a beverage. The love of coffee comes from childhood.

Both my grandmothers loved coffee. In those days when I was young, and my grandmothers were still alive and active, the first thing they did in the morning was made coffee.

I remembered seeing them using the cloth filter to make coffee from grounded coffee. I was too young to handle hot water then. My job was to go to the provision shop and bought the grounded coffee.

The uncle from the provision shop would take the coffee beans, and ground into coffee powder. The grinding sound was horrible, as bad as the sound from the dentist clinic next door.

I cannot remember when I start to drink coffee. I could only remember the cup of black coffee in the morning. That was before the days of instant coffee. Both my grandmothers would make two pots of hot coffee, and poured into the vacuum flask to keep warm. The two pots of coffee would last the family a whole day.

I remembered the sight of black coffee. I remembered the family drinking coffee in the morning. I remembered the family drinking coffee and reading newspaper in the morning. Coffee played a part in capturing the memory of my childhood.

All my grandparents passed away. We will offer prayer and burn hell money to them during the Qing Ming Festival and Hungry Ghost Festival. Coffee is a must in both occasions. I think they would hammer us in our dreams if we forget the coffee. I wonder whether they have coffee in heaven or hell. I hope they enjoy coffee in afterlife. I can’t wonder how any coffee lover, dead or alive, can last a day without coffee.

People of my generation do not make coffee like my grandparents. We used three-in-one instant coffee mix. Those who are better off use coffee machine to make coffee. The provision shop owners do not grind coffee and sell the coffee powder anymore. The powdered coffee sold in supermarket comes in nice tins.

I enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning. This is a life-long habit. Drinking coffee is a way of life. It is one of the rare habits that to remain unchanged through the years.

No matter what the scientific research says, I will still drink coffee. My grandparents were basically healthy, even though they were life-long coffee addicts. They enjoyed drinking coffee, and this habit of drinking coffee did not cause their death. I will continue to drink coffee since I enjoy drinking coffee so much.

I just hope that my grandparents had a chance to enjoy drinking coffee the way we do now. They never had a chance to drink coffee with ice-cream. They probably could not imagine drinking coffee with a scoop of ice-cream on top. That was my favorite way of drinking coffee. I loved to talk the afternoon away with a glass of ice-cream coffee.

My grandparents came from the generation of drinking black coffee. They probably wouldn’t enjoy gourmet coffee. It took a while for me to change the coffee drinking habit of my mother. Until now, she does not appreciate a cup of gourmet coffee from Starbucks. She feels the coffee is awful and she nags at the cutthroat price.

Whatever it is, drinking coffee is as much a part of her life as it is a part of my life. She drinks coffee for so many decades, and she will continue to drink coffee until she departs from this world.
