I just finished reading about a polygamy club in Malaysia in yahoo news.
The news report is at http://sg.news.yahoo.com/ap/20090928/tap-as-malaysia-promoting-polygamy-b3c65ae.html
While polygamy is acceptable for Muslims, since the Quran allows Muslim men to have up to four wives, I doubt there is a need to set up a polygamy club.
Since Malaysia is a Muslim country, polygamy is legal.
The purpose of having a polygamy club is to help “single mothers, reformed prostitutes and women who feel they are past the marrying age.”
I think that it is rather insulting to say that “women” are past the marrying age. Is there such a thing as “marrying age”? I don’t think so. To marry or not to marry is a lifestyle choice.
Once a person has reached adulthood, and can legally marry, he or she can make decision to marry or to stay single. After that reaching adulthood, a person can marry at any age, even at the age of 100. There is no way to pass a law to set a upper limit on marriage.
While there is such thing as childbearing age, there is and never will be “marrying age.”
Love and money will always be the consideration in marriage. There is no way to get two persons to marry without love and marry. Dating is not possible if both are not in love and without money.
Some women may accept polygamy, while others may not. That is again a lifestyle choice. I doubt highly educated Muslim women want to share their husbands with other women.
There is no need to set up a specific polygamy club to woo Malaysians to join and get married.
I wonder what will happen if the Prime Ministers have four wives and bring all the four wives for official visits to other countries. That will probably create enough news to sell newspapers.
I think it’s very cruel to get a man to marry four wives, if he does not have the financial means to support such a big family. It is hard for a husband with one wife to support the family. Polygamy club may have success to get men to marry four wives, however it must find those men who are willing and able to support the big family.
I think the four wives in a polygamy marriage must be rather meek and conservative. I can’t imagine four women who are CEOs in MNC marrying to the same man in a polygamy marriage. I think they will tear the hair of each other out.
Since more and more women are getting highly educated, and holding high salaried jobs, I doubt polygamy is going to be widespread and acceptable to the general population.
I think instead of a Polygamy club to marry women away, it is better to have a self-help groups to help the women to make a living. Once the women learn useful skills, they can support themselves forever.
Polygamy is just a short term solution. Once the husband died, there will be four widows, instead of one widow. If all the four wives in a polygamy marriage rely on the husband for financial support, who is going to help them when this man dies?
