There are many funny parts in Night Prey by John Sandford as well.

The clue to the identity of the serial killer is right in front of them, yet nobody takes much notice. The clue comes from a deaf guy who swears that the license plate of the lorry starts with ASS. Since the authority forbids plates with certain undesirable words, it is impossible to have a lorry with plate starting with ASS.

Night Prey by John Sandford starts with the introduction of the serial killer, Koop. The description of Koop is rather misleading. At first, I thought that Koop progresses from small crimes to killing. Only at the end of the book, when the identity of Koop is revealed, then I realize the mistake.

Night Prey by John Sandford also highlights Sarah Jensen, the woman that Koop is stalking. The novel never gives a clear explanation why Koop is attracted to Sarah Jensen. I like Sarah Jensen. She is the kind of successful businesswomen that all of us yearn to be.

Night Prey by John Sandford is an outstanding thriller. It seems that everything leads to a dead-end right up to the middle of the book. Very frustrating to see that a serial killer leaves no clue behind.

There is an interesting subplot in Night Prey by John Sandford as well. That is a murder case which his partner is handling. The outcome is very unique.

They are always so irritating and tactless. Since they won’t change, we have to change our attitude. I think the best is to treat them as non-existent, unworthy of our notice.

Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh is such a fitting title for this book.


The victim is Miss Campanula, a spinster about fifty years old. As Miss Campanula plays her favorite musical piece for a charity show, the shot from within the piano kills her. The murderer arranges in such a way to trigger the gun when Miss Campanula steps on the soft pedal.

Death by a Rachmaninov Prelude is very fitting since it is supposedly a burial musical piece. This method of murder combines the schoolboy’s trick and the poisonous mind of the perverted murderer.

The setting of Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh is in the small English village. The whole story centers on the village life and its gossips. The job of Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn and Brer Fox is to listen to village gossips and understand the cast of characters better. In this small village, there is no shortage of gossips at all.

I find it very funny that the local policeman is such a talkative fellow. He apparently participates in gossiping and loves to air his opinion freely. This adds to the fun of the whole story.

The characterization of Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh is extremely well-done. There are many instances when Ngiao Marsh enters the minds of the different persons, and let us know their thoughts. I think the characterization of the two spinsters, Miss Prentice and Miss Campanula, who are fighting to get the attention of the rector is the best of all. The rector, being a weak and kind person, is terrified of the two women.

I cannot imagine how Henry and Dinah feel to have two crazy spinsters to gossip about their relationship. Both spinsters are extremely jealous of the young persons, since they are clamoring for love without any success. They cannot tolerate that the young people are so much in love.

While the identity of the murderer is rather obvious, the motive and the opportunity are not. It seems that the murderer has no opportunity at all to set the trap.

Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh is a funny and exciting detective novel. Those who love Chief Detective Inspector Alleyn and his team, especially Brer Fox, will enjoy Overture to Death by Ngaio Marsh very much.
